چکیده

We report the discovery of water maser emission in eight active galactic nuclei (AGN) with the 70-m NASA Deep Space Network (DSN) antennas at Tidbinbilla, Australia and Robledo, Spain. The positions of the newly discovered masers, measured with the VLA, are consistent with the optical positions of the host nuclei to within 1σ (0. 3 radio and 1. 3 optical) and most likely mark the locations of the embedded central engines. The spectra of two sources, NGC3393 and NGC5495, display the characteristic spectral signature of emission from an edge-on accretion disk, with orbital velocities of ∼ 600 and ∼ 400km s, respectively. In a survey with DSN facilities of 630 AGN selected from the NASA Extragalactic Database, we have discovered a total of 15 water maser sources. The resulting incidence rate of maser emission among nearby (vsys < 7000 km s ) Seyfert 1.8 − 2.0 and LINER systems is ∼ 10% for a typical rms noise level of ∼ 14mJy over 1.3 km s spectral channels. As a result of this work, the number of nearby AGN (vsys < 7000 km s ) observed with < 20mJy rms noise has increased from 130 to 449. Subject headings: galaxies: active — galaxies: individual (AM2158-380NED02, IC0184, NGC0235A, NGC0613, NGC3393, NGC4293, NGC5495, VIIZW073) — galaxies: Seyfert — ISM: molecules — ISM: jets and outflows — masers

The Discovery of H2O Maser Emission in Seven AGN and at High Velocities in the Circinus Galaxy

We report the discovery of H2O maser emission at 1.35 cm wavelength in seven active galactic nuclei (at distances up to < 80 Mpc) during a survey conducted at the 70-m diameter antenna of the NASA Deep Space Network near Canberra, Australia. The detection rate was ∼ 4%. Two of the maser sources are particularly interesting because they display satellite high-velocity emission lines, which are a...

Gravity Deformation Measurements of NASA’s Deep Space Network 70-Meter Reflector Antennas

All of NASA’s Deep Space Network (DSN) 70-m reflectors were measured using a Leica TDM-5000 theodolite. The main-reflector surface was measured at five elevation angles so that a gravity deformation model could be derived that described the main-reflector distortions over the entire range of elevation angles. The article describes the measurement equipment and accuracy and the results derived f...

Discovery of Water Maser Emission in Five AGN and a Possible Correlation Between Water Maser and Nuclear 2− 10 keV Luminosities

The positions of the newly discovered masers, measured with the VLA, are consistent with the optical positions of the host nuclei to within 1σ (0. 3 radio and 1. 3 optical) and most likely mark the locations of the embedded central engines. An Array Feed Radial Basis Function Tracking System for NASA's Deep Space Network Antennas

The use of radial basis function networks for fine pointing NASA’s 70-meter deep space network antennas is described and evaluated. We demonstrate that such a network, working in conjunction with the array feed compensation system, and trained using the computationally efficient orthogonal least-squares algorithm, can point a 70meter deep space antenna with rms errors of less than 0.3 millidegr...

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...
